What about implemented voice com?

Post by Fahrrad »

It*s 2015, even counter-strike does have it. Everyone can install teamspeak, but I never find the right room and it's unpractical.

Im not sure how the devs would go about adding voice communication however I feel it would be beneficial for the openra team to invest in a teamspeak/mumble server as I think a lot of players would use it. The only problem I see is paying for the server.
There is currently a mumble server that I have seen people use, hosted by the people who do the 64H servers i think

The crux of the issue is there is no voice communication available at all unless you want to go to the extra effort of purchasing a server and attempted to tell the other players to join.
I can understand not adding voice communication but how about a centralized voice communication server for OpenRA? I think Fahrrad is implying he only wants ingame voice com but a centralized server would fix the problem with using Teamspeak It would be beneficial to OpenRA to not only grow but also allow the community to develop. I understand that the developers use the IRC to communicate ideas regarding development however this isn't beneficial from a players viewpoint.

Having a mumble.openra.net server is definitely a good idea. Go to http://www.openra.net/community/ and join the chat room. Ask baxxster and ihpthru who maintain our servers if they can set something up.

In the meantime you can use the one provided by CnCNet:

Host: mumble.cncnet.org
Password: cncnet

The client as well as the server is available for free from http://mumble.info

We already have a community-donated mumble server, provided by jaZz_KCS who runs the 64H servers. Apparently (I don't use mumble) you can find it from "mumble - europe - german - 64H Multiplayer". We have also been able to use hamb's server for years. There's no need to push people on to the cncnet infrastructure.

He is only suggesting to the CnCNet servers since I assume he wasnt made aware of this community server. It just appears as if there isn't enough advertisement to the other members of the community. I assumed that server was used by a few but I wasnt aware it was donated to the community. It is actually quite simple to add a link that opens mumble for you. And advertisement in the OpenRA game would be preferable for the less involved community members

"For example voice chat could be a capability provided by the radar dome. And destroying it could disable voice chat for that player. Or infiltrating radar dome with a spy could give the player ability to listen to enemy radio."

That would be awesome
