Big Team Tournament - Coverage

Post by SoScared »

Live-streaming is the easiest way of covering the event. The workload of exporting a vod from a livestream is 40 times less than rendering and editing screen capture from a replay in post-coverage. Obviously we won't have FiveAces or me available 100% during the week of the tournament, however, if the two of us could try stay available on IRC as much as possible then we could be pinged every time a match is taking place, giving us a chance to live-stream the match.

Viewer count on VODS's versus live-streams are vastly different. While tournament VOD's can reach 1000's, live streams seldom carry more than 10-20 viewers. However, from experience, live-streaming encourage participation and helps pushing the event forward.

A well organized VOD system post-tournament will showcase OpenRA best. In the event that we get to see all matches casted (less likely) I'd suggest uploading them to the official OpenRA youtube page. Let's be honest, not all of the matches will be too interesting and I personally wouldn't want to flood my channel with hours of mediocre content. Competition can always be exciting but there's always gonna be a bunch of dull matches with limited amount of entertainment value. This is not to dump dull content on to OpenRA's youtube page, but to use it as a documentation utility, after which we could set up a playlist for the best matches, and one playlist for the entire tournament. In the event that we end up uploading good highlights from the tournament (more likely) I'd suggest using FiveAces channel in order to add quality content to a quality channel. FiveAces is himself invested in the tournament as a participating player and so I feel it more appropriate for him to get the content on his channel. The content would including duo casting but perhaps also single casting when one of us is not available for live streaming (we could also duo cast a replay of a particularly good match we might have missed).

*** UPDATED POST ***

*There will be two 3-hour windows for tournament matches - one for the European crowd around 19.00 UTC, and another one for the US and Australia/NZ. Stream will have a 3-minute delay to prevent streamcheating.

Given that we likely will end up with VOD's from different livestreams we ought to have a similar style and quality. That naturally means I won't be streaming with personal tags on the stream client. I'll be looking to make some easy graphics layovers for the stream client as well.

How about collecting all the replays on gamereplays.org with a specific BTT tag, and then cherry-picking the best, say, 4 matches for duocasts? At the end of each match, we would also have a scoreboard with the results of the other games, just like in soccer, maybe with a short recap (3-4 setences per match).

So, here's the new plan:

Over the course of those 7 days, there would be two 3-hour windows for tournament matches - one for the European crowd around 19.00 UTC, and another one for the US and Australia/NZ.

SoScared and me will provide live coverage for the European timezone on my youtube channel; it would be great to find a livecaster for the US/AUS/NZ zone as well
(maybe AoAGeneral is up to it? He has a livestream set up on twitch).
This would require the matches to be played on an official tournament server and with the casters as spectators.

I will start advertising the tourney as soon as we have agreed on the setup; there should be a newspost on gamereplays, and maybe we can get it onto cncnet.

Stream will have a 3-minute delay to prevent streamcheating.

Sounds ok to you guys?

I like everything about this. I sent AoA a PM and pre-emptively added him to the forum group :) Crossing fingers!

I might be able to do stream casting within those timezones. However I need to collaberate with my friends on this due to me being on vacation till about the 10th of novemeber. On the 7th I wont be active because I will be at Blizzcon.

After that time it is a possible.

When my computer is on I am always on Skype. So either of you can easily contact me on there for anything too (With the exception of nov 1st till the 10th.)

EDIT: I will make a post in here if I am capable of doing the streams for the tourny.

I asked hamb and he's willing to try casting some of the US/AUS/NZ timezone matches! Perhaps he could do those from 7th to 10th Nov so you don't have to interrupt your vacation

Also, consider going duo-casts whenever possible! You both got a great voice for casting.

US/AUS/NZ timeslot will be from 01.00 UTC until 04.00 UTC

Nice work getting gamereplays.org on board FiveAces!

Thanks for the invite SoScared - hi everyone! If you need me I can fill vacancies, I should be free during the aforementioned US/AUS/NZ play times. I've been fairly disconnected from the RA scene but was very active in the past.

Happy to see you here hamb!

For simplicity sake, if could you stream the first 4 days (7th to 10th) until AoA is back from vacation then that would be great! There's currently no preset time-slot for the US/AUS/NZ matches - we could just collaborate with Ripley on when the time fits best, and peg it as an official one.
