[D2K] Complete French translation for the Dune 2000 mod

Post by tnalias »

Hi everyone,

I'm sharing a complete French translation of the Dune 2000 mod's interface: menus, units, buildings, mission objectives, lobby, settings, hotkey descriptions. It's available on my fork here:

https://github.com/tnalias/OpenRA-fr/tree/l10n-fr

Scope of the work
  • All .ftl files in mods/d2k/fluent/ and mods/common/fluent/, plus the campaign headers in mods/d2k/missions.yaml
  • Based on release-20250330
  • Syntax validated with fluent.syntax (zero errors), string lengths checked in-game to avoid UI overflow
  • The README also includes step-by-step instructions for adding French voices, music and cutscenes, for players who already own a legal copy of the original game (CD or Gruntmods Edition)
What's not covered yet
  • Individual mission titles/descriptions (they live in each map's own map.yaml, ~34 files)
  • A few strings hardcoded on the engine side rather than in Fluent (e.g. "Hotkeys", "Skirmish Game")
My question for the team
I know the migration to Fluent is still ongoing across several mods, and that the project historically preferred finishing the English string extraction before merging non-English translations (I found the 2013 discussion on PR #3949 for context). Is that still the current position? I'd love to know whether there's a path toward eventually integrating community translations like this one (maybe per-language, per-mod), or whether it's best kept as an independent fork for now that people can grab manually.

One last note: this is genuinely my first project using GitHub properly (branches, forks, and so on), so apologies in advance if my repo setup or commit history isn't quite the convention here — happy to fix anything that's off, and open to feedback on the translation itself too.

Thanks for reading, and thanks for maintaining such a great project!
