How to Mod?

I read that mods work through maps, but I see there's .yaml files in the OpenRA folders (e.g., infantry.yamlgeometry dash lite) how does this work? if I modify my .yaml files will i be able to play with people online?

If you modify the .yaml files outside of maps then you will not be able to play online any more.
