OpenRA's new logo and so-called identity crisis.

Post by SoScared »

All right, seems like the dust finally settled. Here's what I got out of it:

The logo suggestion didn't fit, too noisy and as a logo it conflicts even with the name OpenRA. What influenced me to think this way was one conversation in the news tab started by someone called Leon Pals. http://disq.us/p/1eqabyd

Now first I just want to say personally I'm not really heavily invested in this topic but seeing how this sort of brought the holidays and new year a bit in the mud for some people I wanted to point out a positive third option brought forward by this conversation:

Well, heh, so after many years OpenRA got a bit stuck in the mud with it's name and for the time being and with the Red Alert mod as its flagship. There's no getting around it, at this very moment, the star with the hammer and sickle is currently the most fitting logo for the project but looking forward not only is OpenRA supposed to be a center stage for mods of all kinds, it also (in all likelihood) will have it's flagship replaced with a TS or RA2 mod. The official OpenRA logo currently represents both the whole project and the RA mod itself so it's only fitting to have 2 seperate logo's - one for Red Alert and one for OpenRA. The reality is, however,RA is king. Be it RA or RA2, with TS somewhere in the middle, there will not be another mod that will bring in more players than these two mods respective to their generation (D2K vs TD vs RA and TS vs RA2) unless OpenRA brings aboard later, more popular, titles in the future.

The OpenRA logo should be unique but to artificially conceal the main punch that keeps this project alive simply just won't work. Although the artwork is great, and I hate to say it, the NOT-A-MAMMOTH-TANK logo just won't do it for OpenRA. It looks more like a logo for an app for your phone, an unidentifiable RTS game clone (like 8-bits-armies), or one of those free games found on www.1000FreeGamesSomething.com, more so than a RTS project logo.

So at the end of the day the compromise discussed in the above linked conversation strikes me as the most reasonable. It doesn't divorce itself from the C&C/RA universe but at the same time stands out as unique, and most important of all, simple! To reiterate, what was suggested was something to do with a simple star with some chevrons or veterancy. There's plenty of options but as a core idea, a logo that both tells you "hey there's some serious C&C action in here, but there's also more *wink*". Like, say, a shiny silver star with some gold chevrons in it.

Anyways, the previous logo discussion was thrown into the gutter by the OP but this topic is still alive. Go!

Your lack of responsibility and respect for community response devalued your logo thread. It's garbage as far as I'm concerned. As with your comments and contributions in general I might add.

LOL wait... so you started two logo threads - one on ppm of which you asked to be closed immediately, creating a stir, left it adrift in a shitstorm and then linking that one to the sleipnir thread, which you personally gutted.

Nicely done MicroBit. Bravo, 10/10.

No wonder the community was put in total disarray around new years. Glad I dodged that bullet.

Two points I have taken away from this episode are
  • The wider OpenRA player community is not capable of having an adult discussion on a serious topic.
  • People get very upset when I remove insulting comments from discussion threads in an attempt to keep them on topic.
I'm sure you meant well creating this thread SoScared, but this is not going in a good direction so I am going to lock it now.
