Map Design contest

Post by noobmapmaker »

Who is willing to recieve the maps and upload them to the resource center + post them in a thread? This means that over the coarse of 3 months you'll have to upload 10-20 maps - sounds more than it actually is.

Just an idea nothing special, but I think it would be fun and I'd give $20 for this contest.

$15 for nr1 and $5 for nr2 when at least 10 maps are entered.

Rules:

- Me (and SoScared? and 3rd person?) are jury.

- We make a list of requirements (not sure yet what they will be)

- When the maps are made the jury will individually rate the maps from worst to best, spot 1 gets 1 point, spot 2 gets 2 points etc. An average is taken and the map with the fewest points wins (or some inversed point scoring system)

- Maps will be sent to an assigned 3rd person party who is not part of the jury (e.g. JaZZ_KCS, FIveAces or Hecthor to name a couple). They post the map in a thread so the jury doesn't know who made the map, hopefully preventing any bias.

- People are allowed to enter multiple maps

This competition could run for 2-3 months (allows me to save some money as well :) )

Comments & thoughts?

This is a great idea. The contest could easily provide new high-quality maps as well. I'd support with some $ for this for sure.

Requirements are a bit hard to put down since we probably have different taste and standards as to what a map needs to be good. Also the less requirements the more creative the map maker can be, at his own risk. Perhaps the only requirement for submitting maps to the contest would be for the map to contain no mods. Checking modded maps for playability could be a lot more work for the jury.

The two main points on map quality that come to mind is playability and design.

Would be nice having 3 month-long contests, giving us 4 quarters a year :D

Yes, exactly my thoughts regarding the moddingpart, it's hard to check for us. Or maybe the people are allowed, but they must describe exactly what the modding does. I'd like to allow simple mods.. Who knows they are reaaally awesome. But where to draw a line?

As a 3rd (or 4th if we find a 3rd jury member) jury member we could also open a poll for the popular vote, counting just as heavy as our vote.

Also: who wants to volunteer as jurymember #3 and who wants to be the person that receives and posts the maps in a thread?

I'd assist you guys if you want

But one thing I think should be a primary focus is that the maps balanced so we can add more quality maps into the official pool for tournaments etc.
Balance doesnt mean it has to be symmetrical, it just has to ensure both sides are equal

And would you want to be jury? Or post maps that people send you?

Yes, they indeed must be equal. We'll have to write a text (and ruleset) that provides guidance and also leaves alot of freedom.

Welcome to the Map Design Contest!

This will be a contest to create awesome maps! Anyone is allowed to make maps and a jury + popular vote will choose the best maps and those get awarded real dollars.

Maprules
- Maps should be equal. It can be a symmetrical or asymmetrical map, but players should have (somewhat) equal chances.
- Making changes to the .yaml and adding .lua files are allowed, but the creater has to explain exactly what the changes do to facilitate judging the map.
- It can have any amount of players (even or uneven).
- Maps for all mods are allowed.

The Jury Rules

- A jury consisting of SoScared, Anjew and NoobMapMaker will judge all the maps and list them in their personal favorite order.
- A poll will be posted where all Sleipnir users can vote for their favorite map, resulting in a popular vote list.
- The last map will get 1 point, second to last 2 points, etc.
- All scores from the 3 jury members + popular vote will be added and the maps with the highest scores win the contest.

Map Entry Format
- To prevent bias from the jury the players will enter their maps anonymously. Send your map in a PM (link) to [name] and he will post the map in the resourcecenter and in this thread (link).
- Send the .oramap file
- Also make a screenshot of the entire map, extra screenshots of specific parts of the map are allowed.
- If you have made adjustments to the .yaml or added a lua file then state the exact effects of the changes
- You may enter multiple maps to increase your chance of winning.

Contest Information
The contest starts in April and lasts untill the 30th of June 23:59 GMT. Untill that date you can enter your maps. In the 2 weeks thereafter the maps will be judged and people can vote for their favorite maps. July 15th the winners will be presented.
The map that ends highest will be awarded $15 and the runnerup $5 (will be sent using paypal, make sure you have paypal!)

I am willing to help judge.

Probably need to just say its for any mod, unless you want a specific one

Guys, do we think we can resist bias? If so then let's delete the anonymous part, people should just upload it themselves.

Sign me up as a jury member as well :)

Agreed to that the map contest ought to be for all default mods. More participants, more quality maps for all mods!

I think uploading anonymously is a good idea. It's much easier being critical to an anonymous author. We need someone outside the jury to receive the maps. The participants has to refrain from uploading their maps themselves during the contest and avoid spoiling the authorship. Once the contest is over, the map receiver for the contest will delete the maps from their account and the authors themselves will have to upload the maps to their own.

Hmm yeah anonymous is better, but who is willing to upload all those maps? It's not a fun job although its not alot of work either.

As for the award money, you can add in $50 from me!

Because you pledged $50 to the Global League, we don't have to transfer those specific funds :D

$35 for the first prize ($50 total)

$15 for the runner-up ($20 total)

just read that now! thats awesome SoScared! Ill update the OP! first we work out the details :)

*edit: we could also do something with the category winners though. E.g. its $70 total atm. We then do $40 for the winner - $20 for runner up + $10 is for one of the category winners. We will draw lots (during your livestream) amongst the categorywinners*

This to create an incentive for people to make several maps.

*A map that allready ended first/2nd will not enter the draw.

Idea?

I'll definitely help out with streams!

The price structure looks ok, just be careful not to spread it to small bits too much :)

we should come up with some catergories we will judge the maps on such as:

Aesthetics
Balance (if neccessary)
implementation (How it plays eg. whether its chokey or not etc)

and anything else you can come up with really

also we should look at getting together to try and play these maps
