I keep getting hit hard after 20 minutes and then getting pummeled by the AI before I can rebuild.
I played fine as a kid on the original so what changed? Maybe my settings are too hard?
I'm hoping for some advice or help to get me through this.

You can check this video tutorial for META build order. If you follow it you will be able to A-move CPU player. And even many real players in Multiplayer games, which I suggest you to try in order to have more fun.

What are you doing 20 minutes?
You can kill ai in:
3 minutes - build engineer and capture his command center.
8-10 minutes: build 1-2 barracks and flood him with soldiers.
12-16 minutes: build barracks, tank factory and radar and wipe him with artillery + support troops.
At 20 minutes you can control the whole map and crush him at any second.
Probably you do not build enough harvesters, if you have problems.
