I think that unit formations are a great advanced feature of RTS games. I used to play AOE2, and it had the options for different army formations. Red Alert also had the option to keep units marching the same speed, so they could arrive as one force instead of being picked off one by one as they arrived to their destination.
Formations in OpenRA should help streamline unit management by placing them in certain shapes and positions. No more having to micro units into seperate groups of the same force, this formation system would also employ a smart unit type system by putting longer ranged units behind armored units, ect. This would also spread units evenly instead of bunching up around one destination, and easily creates a front that the player would otherwise have to implement manually.
By default units should have no formation, and must have one assigned to them. This could be assigned to them with toggle buttons like [ and ]. Units with different formation orders when grouped together will act wothout one, but often numbered groupings would have the same formations to prevent such confusion. A letter or symbol should appear on the unit display to reflect what formation they're in.
I think that formations could make things better in Command and Conquer, and I hope that this offers new opportunity to this great game.
