the gate might be disadvantage in that if a unit gets near it it's capable of opening. sometimes, such as when you're building near a cliff, it'd be something you get trapped into. Reverse-engineering's legality in the OpenRA engine has been addressed before. So long as the game's non-profit and has original coding I do believe it's protected.
