General Discussion / Simple Questions, Simple Answers

Post by OMnom »

I'm not a moderator by any stretch of imagination, but the following type of threads:

http://www.sleipnirstuff.com/forum/view ... 82&t=20008
http://www.sleipnirstuff.com/forum/view ... 82&t=20011
http://www.sleipnirstuff.com/forum/view ... 82&t=20010
http://www.sleipnirstuff.com/forum/view ... 82&t=19979
http://www.sleipnirstuff.com/forum/view ... 82&t=20005
http://www.sleipnirstuff.com/forum/view ... 82&t=20006
http://www.sleipnirstuff.com/forum/view ... 82&t=20004
http://www.sleipnirstuff.com/forum/view ... 82&t=19985

either contain little to no content to discuss or are completely derailed with content that is contrary to what the OP is trying to discuss.

Please just put that stuff in this thread from now on....it's quite annoying having to deal with topics that are unrelated to the thread, and it'd be better to consolidate all ideas/questions/suggestions that keep derailing threads into just one thread.

I feel half of these threads could be fixed if the players just used IRC to ask their questions.

That is true but forums offer good documentation and some players will use search function to check if their question has been already answered before.

I find that "General Discussion" and "Question & Answer" topics are usually separated on message boards. Regarding thread spam, as this board is somewhat small in terms of community and does not seem to have designated topic(s), "thread spam" becomes somewhat common (especially among newly registered users).

Now, as for ideas, it would be nice to have a topic that consolidates all of this information. Perhaps Tech Centers, Bio Labs, Snipers, and Migs have been discussed countless times, but new players have no idea of this. So, when they come to the message boards all bright-eyed and filled with optimism then are promptly shot down by veterans, it is easy to see why some may wish to avoid such communities.

Discussing the Technology Center & Bio Lab is fine. Discussing easy gameplay polishes is also fine. Three topics are questions that could have easily been placed within a mega-topic (perhaps this one if it becomes the place to go). Hijackers / Thieves can be its own topic or thrown into the "idea thread."

Sure, these topic are not grand masterpieces of data-tested information, but I do agree it can be frustrating when topics are derailed such as the Snipers, Spies, and the French topic. Not everyone is aware of the latest playtests or streams, whether official or not.

A recent good idea topic is Fortnight's Red Alert Overhaul, featuring Uzbekistan as a third playable faction. Not only was the overhaul playable, but the topic creator outlined reasons why things were changed and adjusted.

Also, I am also here to use the forums. I should not be asked to "go check the IRC" or some outside resource if I need something OpenRA related. Not everything seems to be on the Wiki either. If the documentation and resources exist in the first place, then this would not be that big an issue.

Fortnight actually made a thread where all you did was post your ideas http://www.sleipnirstuff.com/forum/view ... 82&t=19798. In my opinion, that thread should be stickied so that players like Minotaur and RadicalEdward who wish to contribute can discuss their ideas in that thread rather than creating a new one every time they think of something.

In a perfect world, we'd have a mega-thread for every topic. But people seem content to just litter this forum with their own threads rather than thinking "oh hey we should consolidate all of this discussion into one thread." I'm just trying to incorporate some aspects of other forums I've been a part of into this forum and to clean this place up a little bit.

No one will give you that answer because when they see the thread they will help. This forum is much more of an outside source than IRC. It is seldom used by developers/moderators, its built into an old website with locked topics everywhere and other than the announcements and a link on openra.net, it doesnt claim to be official in anyway. The IRC on the other hand is always populated with developers, players and various other community members who are able to give much more information and attention than this forum.

Don't bother. I already attempted months ago and got a plethora of excuses. I believe the idea is to move the OpenRA forums to a new domain and separate it from the sleipnirsstuff however apparetly this wont happen until someone else does it since I dont think there is any web devs. And from what I was told, no new mods can be put in because it requires the backend being fixed. This why I have virtually given up on the forums except to talk balance and talk shit.

Hmm. A shame these forums are not used as much then. I am more of a message board guy than an IRC one.

Thanks for all of your insights!

Its best used to find stuck pixels or dead pixels on the monitor.

There are mappers however who change tints on the maps to make it appear the sun is setting or its night time which can help on such map types.

As far as the thread collaboration goes its best to use threads for discussion on a larger base. (*Cough cough* RA1 balance *Cough*). But often times the threads get broken down into derailed conversations/ignored areas for betterment of its thread itself.

As anjew pointed out best to ask these type of things on the IRC. Even with ORA Discord channel up can ask about things there too. Also used as looking for players/games too.

Eh...some people like IRC, some prefer forums to chat. If people don't want to use IRC, then hopefully people will use this thread instead of making more threads like http://www.sleipnirstuff.com/forum/view ... 82&t=20022 and http://www.sleipnirstuff.com/forum/view ... 82&t=20024. Its just a hope, but one day, maybe, those threads will be a thing of the past.

And this thread was puposely made to be derailed =)

I am personally quite against mega threads. They become cluttered easily and occasionally when new player asks something, there is elitistic response of something like "Already answered in pages 5, 27 and 89. Please read entire thread before posting".

However, quick and simple answers type of thread could be alright. But I think most threads Omnom linked for reference have relevant discussion and I don't see simple questions thread achieving similar results.
