How to play the original missions?

Post by aldicek »

Hi folks,

since I discovered OpenRA last week, I installed the openra_release.20140722_all.deb packages on two different computers, both running on Linux Mint. Installation worked like a charm, the further steps to get a mod via download basic content were easy to do and selfexplaining. Great work so far. But ending the first single player mission of Red Alert (no matter whether I won or lost) paused the game and I wasn't able to find out how to unpause (Pressing the F3 key maybe?), so I had to abort the mission finally. The same happened while testing Tiberium Dawn afterwards. I didn't have any idea if this was still work in progress or an undiscovered bug though. Soon enough I found out, that copying the original *.mix files of Tiberium Dawn to the right place (~/.openra/content/td) fixed this, because the game simply pauses for a video to be displayed, so it's not really a bug, but irritating for new users anyhow. But this brings me to my mainly intended questions: How do I do this for Red Alert? (Simply copying the *.mix files to ~/.openra/content/ra didn't change anything, so I guess, the *.mix files on the CD are still to unpack somehow. But HOW?) And how to do the same thing for Dune 2000? (There aren't any *.mix files in this 51 MB download that you can find looking for "free download dune 2000", so which files are to copy to the d2k content folder?)
I know that most of the target audience installs OpenRA to fight net battles, but I'm sure there are also many occasional players like me who are merely interested in the single player missions. For that reason it would be great to have the option to manipulate the game speed via slider in the options window or hotkeys as I vaguely remember it from the original game.
Also I had some problems to get used to the unfamiliar scrolling behaviour of OpenRA. Usually, if I move the mouse to the edge of the screen, it scrolls until the edge of the map reaches the similar edge of the screen. Here in OpenRA it scrolls further on until the edge of the map is in the centre of the screen. This is irritating, especially in the beginning of a game, when almost the whole map is unrevealed yet.
Thanks for any helpful hint,

Cheers
Aldicek

The original campaigns are work in progress:

* https://github.com/OpenRA/OpenRA/issues/4989 for the RA one
* https://github.com/OpenRA/OpenRA/issues/4988 for the TD one

We have not started with the D2k one, mostly due to not supporting the original map format https://github.com/OpenRA/OpenRA/issues/4281 yet, which we need for automatic import.
