Red Alert Global League: Season 9 - Post Season Discussion

Post by eskimo »

Season not quite over, but i wanted to ask about the maps, so starting the Post Season Discussion thread early as map discussion is helpful and relevant.

Having not followed pre season, how were the maps chosen, and did players feel about the map choice? Maps chosen look nice to me. Wondered if there was a, pick small/medium/large, watery, spawn distance, gem numbers, etc type of picking?

Someone posting the map played figures would be great, i believe NNG had a tool for that IIRC?

Am curious as there's a few watery maps, namely the infamous Dual Cold Front.

It is my first season, but here some feedback based on what I observed:

The good:
- RAGL Discord server: I was first a bit sceptical about a separate one, but at the end, I think it was a good idea.
- RAGL bot + Google Sheets table is pretty neat. Everyone can report their own games is great. It was a bummer sometimes when the bot was down, but well, that can always happen.
- Maps: Most of the maps were quite good and I like that there were chosen a lot of new ones. If there would have been too many old ones, new players would have had a small disadvantage as the old players probably know them inside out. So I prefer for next season a lot of new maps again if that possible.
- Admin not enforcing strikes etc: Not sure if everyone agrees with me here, but I think it was nice to let the players choose themselves when they can play or not play their matches and not enforcing strikes etc. It looks like most of the time, it worked out quite well.
- Minion Casting by Biomecman was nice.
- The Match-up system: Higher ranked player needs to choose first the map and the 1-map-ban-option is also cool and forces player to play/choose different maps.

The not so good:
- Minion size: 18 players in Minion was definitely too much. It means 36 games for each player if nobody drops. You need quite some determination to play that many games of such a long period. At some point (when summer started), playing my games felt more painful than enjoyable as you are running out of steam. If the thing goes 2,5x months and some people drag their games to the end while you prefer to play as much as possible in the beginning, it means you are in for a big gap. I would argue 13 should be the maximum (=24x games = 6x weeks). I also think having a two separate minion leagues means that it is more likely that everyone finishes their games, as this season showed clearly that it was too much for multiple players.
- Map selection process: While the maps were generally good, and the admins asked for suggestions at the start, I was a bit surprised that there was never a vote at the beginning which I read somewhere would take place.
- Admins not too responsive: There were quite a few times where some small things had to be done but nobody reacted. At the end, it felt also like Minion league was left to themselves.
- Change announcement during season: If things change, a ping to everyone would have been good. When we discovered that the Swamp map was not really fair, a decision should have been made. The "it is up to the players to decide"-thing can go wrong as not everyone follows all the chit-chat in the discord. When my enemy suddenly choose that map while the game got casted, I felt like I don't want to "be that guy" who does not want to play it so I just went for it to prevent any drama. Afaik there were also other small situations were a clear admin announcement would have been things easier.
- Direct promotion discussion: I think it was absolutely fair to promote ILM and morkel directly as they have proven their Masters skill. But when there were questions about the direct promotion process, the reaction of it was very unprofessional. Well done though by anjew to try to communicate the thing a bit more.
- Semi-ghosting by some players: It can get a bit tedious to plan some games when people kinda ghost and you have to write multiple times. I don't want to call out anyone and did not want to get a free-win, but if that becomes too much next season, I have better things to do then chasing certain players. But to be fair, it was only hard with 1-2x players to get a game going.

This is what pops into my head, I might add something later.

Player Stats

Some of this looks a bit odd because some players (e.g. Bain) played matches with/without their forum account. Names are from forum account. Factions are E, F, G, R and U for nation pick, A and S for Allies/Soviets and ? for Random. Builds that players used at least 3 times are included.

Overall Popular Build Orders

This shows all builds that were used at least 20 times. Note that this can't be used to compare the popularity of e.g. double ref vs WF first; it might be helpful for players looking for viable builds though.

Re: Red Alert Global League: Season 9 - Post Season Discussion

Post by Clockwork »

Firstly I would like to say this was definitely the most competitive season ever for Masters and Minions, with 9/10 of the top 10 in Masters for maybe the first time ever and Minions not being cursed with the minions hell to allow for a hugely competitive season with 6-8 players fighting for promotion akin to 7 players fighting for top 4 in Masters.

I would like to say that not enforcing strikes is most likely the reason why this seasons masters had no drop outs. One of the biggest complaints of the league is people don't have time for week to week match ups. I would not of been able to play this season if that was the case. I had to miss 5-6 weeks and then play a back log of games in the remaining half and I think this was the same for a few people.

I also agree with the notion that minions is too big and maybe with the newly developing competitive scene, to reinstate recruits below minions. There were a lot of good players in the bottom/mid half of minions, TTTPPP came to mind, that could've pushed to win a recruit title and develop a bit more.

One of the other points was the automatic masters promotions and I'd have to say these were a great idea. The 6th, 3rd and 2nd place players in this seasons masters were auto promoted. Now being that 6th player I would've loved a season to piss about in minions with so curses to .1 for that. I do not think this system should change, if a player distinguishes himself highly off season for example consistently beating the best players at 1v1 then they should be promoted to promote competitiveness in Masters and also to avoid Minions returning to minions hell of old. This minions was rare, last season had goat (the s9 champ), barf (the s5,s6 champ), and blackened (s5 runner up) competing. and guess what happened? They came top like every other minions crusher in the past. I have pushed for this automatic promotions in the past for the same idea to unstack lower divisions.

I also think the map pool this season was one of the best, it only had a single meme map which is a new record (sorry Mo). However the maps themselves suffered from imbalances, The Swamp in particular. Better map reviewing procedure should be put in place.

I agree with happy on every single point. Best map pool in a long time and lots of awesome games and great coverage in general .

If i might suggest 2 points of improvement:
- stick to the original map pool deadline. This gives players the time to practice and evaluate maps.
- bottom half of minions had nothing to play for after some matches. Perhaps playoffs/ playoffs spots might help or a “play of the season” award could help.

I didn't really notice much significant difference before, but maybe someone else will. E,g, Masters build naval, Minions build MAD tanks. Chinooks guarantee you the win in Minions, but always lose in Masters. ;-)

+1 to everything happy said, though I wish I could blame unstacking minions for my failure this season >_>

Though on the topic of map pool, the system for banning/picking maps is awkward and confusing at times.
I think maybe the map pools are a little too large, or players should be allowed to veto an additional map.

A request from i like men to see the stats for faction win rates per player. For example the third row says that Happy ("Clockwork") won 80% of his games when playing as Allies against Soviets.

I agree with most of what has been said.
Even though I lost most of my games, I really enjoyed this season a lot. Even though I don't have the time to follow all the discussions on Discord, I felt it was also a great way to build a community around the shared passion for this awesome game.
It's a pity some players ghosted during the season without any notification (what happened to Zaqzorn ?). I also loved the coverage of the games by Kaution.

My suggestions for next season:
- Indeed, Minions was a bit too big, even though we played twice a week (which I did not mind), for some people, as Yara pointed out, it seemed to take too long. It would be nice if we could complete a season in say six weeks. I think a Recruit division would be nice as I felt there was still a huge skill divide in Minions between people like Yara, SinJul,... and say TTTPPP and myself. It will also lower the bar for people who are new to the genre to join the community.
- Even more technical integration. The bot was already nice, but we should go for official RAGL servers which automatically process the replays, update the scoreboard and everything. And of course more post-game stats. Because we all love statistics :) I don't mind to contribute to this effort if needed.
- Participants who schedule a game, should have the chance to share this somewhere on a shared calendar so people who are interested are aware. Of course this is entirely optional.
- It's nice to watch replays casted by streamers but it would be nice if somebody would make a digest. As in, these are the highlights of this weeks RAGL games.

Thanks again to all who made this event possible.

Re: Red Alert Global League: Season 9 - Post Season Discussion

This was my first season in RAGL and I really enjoyed it. At the start of the season I was aiming just to come in better than last, but by the end I'd won games against a good portion of the table.

The absolute highlight this season was undoubtedly Biomecaman's incredible casting of Minion's matches. There were several games that I felt I'd played really badly, but after watching it back alongside a neutral commentary then I was able to see there were plenty of good things too. Watching these casts gave me a huge confidence boost as well as plenty of pointers to help me play better. Hopefully at some point in the future I'll even start putting refs down adjacent to ore patches!

As has already been mentioned, Minions was a big league. I lost 7 matches, drew 8 (including a cancelled game against Moods) and won none. If the league had been split in two then I would have still ended up midtable, regardless of how the split worked (Minions/Recruits or Minions A/Minions B). I had time to play the games and really enjoyed getting to play this many matches though.

From following the previous season then I already had an idea of .1's unique administration style, and he did manage to antagonise people plenty of times this season too. However I was quite surprised to find that his decisions were almost all good ones! The one "unfair" decision IMO was not to enforce strikes or forfeits for unplayed games. In particular this made a difference to Sigil who suddenly had no way to qualify above SinJul simply because Zaqzorn was AWOL. I'd have preferred the delays and strikes to be enforced more firmly, so that everyone knew where they stood at the end of the season.

The other area I'd suggest improving is having a pre-season bloodbath week for new players to qualify for masters.* I think players like Morkel/ilikemen/Happy should have to win their place in masters by playing those relegated from masters the previous season. Probably the end result would have been the same, but it would give more credibility to the league. Perhaps this qualification process could double as map-pool testing.

In conclusion I wanted to say thanks to everyone who organised the season, and especially to Biomecaman for casting!

* Editing to clarify that the "bloodbath" term should be credited to someone on Discord (maybe Net) - although I'm sure many of us thought of the idea of pre-season qualification to Masters. Indeed the "hidden path to masters" was basically an attempt to solve the same problem.

Continuing the stream of stats that no one asked for...

Restricting the faction win results to just random v random picks give a much more even Allies v Soviets score:

Code: Select all

Faction Win Rate
England 3/ 8 38%
France 12/ 21 57%
Germany 8/ 19 42%
Allies 23/ 48 48%
Russia 17/ 27 63%
Ukraine 7/ 19 37%
Soviet 24/ 46 52%
Random 47/ 94 50%
Presumably there's a pretty large margin of error here, since I don't really think Russia can be that much better than Ukraine (and in fact only 2 of these games had shock troopers or tesla tanks).

To give an idea of who was playing in these random v random matches I'll also include this table showing a reasonable spread of games by different players:

Code: Select all

=== Faction-Player Win Rates ===
Name | Allies vs A | Allies vs S | Soviet vs A | Soviet vs S
-----------------+--------------+--------------+--------------+--------------

In particular this made a difference to Sigil who suddenly had no way to qualify above SinJul simply because Zaqzorn was AWOL. I'd have preferred the delays and strikes to be enforced more firmly, so that everyone knew where they stood at the end of the season.
Sigil has the same score as I do for me and I still stand by the offer to play the minion league 3rd place best of 3 against Sigil.

In general RAGL went smoothly, there's nothing to complain from my side, as I don't really care about the map pool or number of matches.
I just take what I get.

Also special thanks to Biomecaman for the minion casts. Really enjoyed watching them and people thought I would always play WF first because of them.

I hope RAGL season 10 will use a balance that goes away from 2Ref on every single map. I felt like it was the best opener no matter no matter how many oils were on the map. Sov vs Allies balance felt fine overall.

* I like tttppp's idea to have a pre-season bloodbath for masters. Also works great as balance testing / map testing, and I think a lot of minion players might enjoy playing versus master players as well (as they otherwise have no such opportunity in the context of RAGL). I think promoting happy/ilm/morkel to masters via that bloodbath is much more legitimate than us just getting to know about the promotion after the decision has been made.

* Pre-season bloodbath: Also maybe make it possible to demote some masters players if they don't do well. I think we can make masters group even more competitive if the top minions players are moved out and worst masters players are moved down. I don't think masters players should automatically stay in masters even if they were above relegation spot in the preceding season, because some of them might not have played any games between last season and the upcoming season. Makes it not fun for them (because they lose 95% of matches) and less competitive in masters. This suggestion breaks traditions, and I don't really have any strong opinion about it. But I think we should at least play with the thought that masters players should not automatically stay in masters because they didn't do too bad the previous season.

* Map pool: OK. I experimented with wf first early in the season and decided to stick to double ref, because wf first really isn't viable. If an aggressive player attacks early, I am fucked with wf first, so double ref is the only safe choice. tttppp's statistics also show that double ref is prevalent. Would be fun if we have some maps that makes wf first a good choice (e.g. windige gasse, snakes and ladders 2 are nice maps for wf first). We didn't really have any maps where wf first was good in this pool.

* Strikes and no strikes: I think for masters no strike is perfectly fine; all matches played. Maybe consider use strikes for minions, so those people leaving gets kicked out early. The key difference (I think) is that all master players intend to finish their games, they just don't have time, and for minions they might just drop out soon (although most players intend to finish the games, of course).

* I also support the idea of having two minion divisions or a recruits division. Too large minions group for this season.

* RAGL admin a bit too hostile and not giving information in a proper manner. Compare i like men as 2v2 admin (he gives info, pins frequently) and .won with a "I don't care" attitude. For me it was fine, because I was watching the discord activity closely, but not everyone thinks it's fine. Also we lost justsomeguy (a serious contender for minion #1 spot in my opinion) partly to the hostility of the admin (and also because of postponing the ragl season). That could be done differently.

* Pace of the league: Also pretty good.

* Coverage of matches: Really nice! Mostly kudos to biomecaman and kaution for their streaming. And of course, 5a for the youtube replays. I think they are a major component in making RAGL fun to spectate.

And finally, I like the idea of automatic upload of score, so we don't have to go via the discord bot (although that is already pretty good) as suggested by spetsnaz.

I'd like to thank everyone for their feedback and if there is any more that players or viewers have, it would be greatly appreciated to post them. RAGL is made for the community and all views are beneficial to the ongoing success of OpenRA's longest standing competitive event.

I'd like to just reply to a few things brought up and hopefully give some perspective from my side as player and admin
The comments in this post represent my own personal thoughts and do not necessarily represent the views of the RAGL organisation.

As has already been mentioned, Minions was a big league.

I also agree with the notion that minions is too big and maybe with the newly developing competitive scene, to reinstate recruits below minions.

I can see that there is a relative consensus from the players in Minions that the league was too big. One of the primary factions why minions was 1 division instead of 2 is because if there was only 9 players per division this would mean that there would be only 5 weeks of Minions league. I'm curious what people think is the sweet spot for this, obviously it seems that 18 is too many.

Im sorry to hear this occurred, it's not the easiest thing to police without handing out strikes and in a lot of cases, I feel no one is happy with giving the other player a black mark on their scoreboard and a free win. It especially hard when its a matter of a person forgetting or being unpredictably busy. There were cases however where players were being held at the whims of another player trying to corner them into playing at the time that is good for them and not willing to come to a mutual agreement. In these cases I want players to notify all administrators as soon as possible with as much information as possible. Its completely understandable to not want to play at 4am but forcing other players into these situations is completely unacceptable IMO.

The one "unfair" decision IMO was not to enforce strikes or forfeits for unplayed games.

- Admin not enforcing strikes etc: Not sure if everyone agrees with me here, but I think it was nice to let the players choose themselves when they can play or not play their matches and not enforcing strikes etc. It looks like most of the time, it worked out quite well.

I can see that there is differing opinions regarding this overall. It was not the original intention of the league to overlook these however due to the multiple postpones and the hiccups up at the start of the season, I didn't feel it fair to punish people for what may have been the result of a misunderstanding from something RAGL officials had said. It feel it was more a matter of allowing more delays than not striking however in same cases it may have been justified. Just something I want to point out in regard to this though, in the rulebook it clearly states that players should inform officials of failed contact lest both players be striked for failure to report. I am most definitely not attempting to understated the responsibility of RAGL officials to administrate these before it comes this point however this is one of nuances of the rulebook and also puts a strain on myself when I should be punishing both players but neither really deserve it

also because of postponing the ragl season
The confusing and changing of the RAGL was completely regrettable. This is kind of a sore point for me as I had really wanted to get this started during the playtest to help the OpenRA developers with testing but it seemed to have slipped out of my control. Having to change dates multiple times on the thread and rulebook is not something I want to take lightly in the future.

the system for banning/picking maps is awkward and confusing at times.
I think maybe the map pools are a little too large, or players should be allowed to veto an additional map.
I am most definitely open to changes to this system. I have suggested multiple times that a more intricate map picking system should be integrated into Masters and with a map pool size to accommodate this. This however may not fix your identified issue of it being confusing as, in my opinion, the current system is very simple.

Better map reviewing procedure should be put in place.
I wish that I could do this better but I am not a mapper and last I looked neither is .won. The maps for this season were selected based on suggestions and input from the community/players. The elephant in the room everyone is talking about when they bring up this, is "The Swamp." It is regrettable that something like this made it through and the flak from not addressing this is completely understandable but IMO can really begin to open a can of worms when you ban a map. What happens to matches already played on those maps? What about in the case where the person with the 'disadvantage' wins? Perhaps I'm overthinking it but this was one of things that made me hesitate in making a decision. Whether that is incompetence or inexperience I don't know but I would really like to hear a large of opinions regarding this so we can maybe come up with a contingency plan should it ever happen again. However, it should be pointed out that this map was suggested by the players and was given a seconding by other players.

I dont think you are suggesting this was on purpose but I just want to point out that this was completely by accident and definitely not something I noticed when looking at the mappool. This is quite an insidious thing as I dont think it's something that people keep an eye out for unless its the fact all the maps are very similar etc. This impacted me substantially because I am stubborn bastard, set in my ways of WF first. I dont think I would have been able to spot this even with a lot of playing. Hopefully in the future, players and officials can be more mindful of the types of builds a map promotes (or is suited for) but officials are really not the experts on all things maps. This is the catch-22 of pushing new maps into the mappool. It means everyone knows less about the map but it also means we know less about how to exploit it.

- Admins not too responsive: There were quite a few times where some small things had to be done but nobody reacted. At the end, it felt also like Minion league was left to themselves.
I feel the need to take the blame for this. This year has been incredibly and unpredictably tumultuous for myself (as I'm sure for many). I found my free time taken a lot by family matters during this season and was unable to put as much attention into RAGL as I feel I should have, especially the minions league. I absolutely feel I havent lived up to my own expectations of attempting to manage RAGL and will make more than an effort to ensure that this doesnt happen again next season. I hope you haven't been negatively effected by any of the shortcomings of this season.

- It's nice to watch replays casted by streamers but it would be nice if somebody would make a digest. As in, these are the highlights of this weeks RAGL games.
I really wanted to continue on the tradition of Netnazgul's Frontline reports however I feel I couldn't live up to the high quality net would bring to those reports (plus time restrictions). If this is something people are legitimately interested in, I will be more than glad to attempt to carry on the tradition or perhaps there might a community member who would love to do this themselves.

I don't really have much to add, most of the topics brought up here are the primary thoughts of many players and spectators. I do, however, really want to point out (as others have) all the great new content creators who helped cover RAGL this season. This season is possibly the season with the most individuals outputting casting content. I really dont think I can even begin to state the importance of these people to RAGL and ORA as a whole.
Biomecaman really deserves a special mention for the sheer amount of matches he has covered and the high quality he brings to the table
If no one has seen them: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCD2Mk3 ... 3rmljeeloQ
Also a special mention to Kaution, putting out a lot of content and dedicating a lot of time to streaming OpenRA.

Thanks to all for your contributions.

Thanks everyone for playing.

JSG dropped because he wasn't promoted to masters when he thought he should have. We believe we made the correct choice in who should be promoted to masters( auto promote) and those paid off as Happy stated.

As far as being unresponsive, I will agree to that, Anjew is in OZ, and im in the US. I am thinking about bringing in a 3rd Admin to cover the Euro time zone so we will have coverage pretty much 24/7, also, a lot of the times people didn't read the rule book and the answers to their questions are in there. Ultimately, we aren't here to hold your hand, if you have an issue, sort it with the player, check the rule book, and as a last resort talk to an admin. The league is pretty much set up and self run, as it works the best this way..

I wouldn't mind giving out a top play award or something of that nature, however, the prize pool was pretty small this season, so we felt it was best to just give it to the Masters winner, as breaking it up into small pieces + a paypal fee + a conversion to local currency eats into that.
