Feasibility? - Factions & Tech Upgrades

Hey everyone. Hope you can answer a question I have.

I like the idea of the C&C mod (or other mods) going in the direction of having 2 factions per side. One good way to distinguish factions is to have "unique upgrades" that only one faction gets for its units.

My question is, how technically feasible is it to have "tech upgrades" in OpenRA?

Example: you click on your Tech Center and certain upgrades are available to buy for your faction. One option might be "Give Hum-vees the TOW missile upgrade" if you're GDI's Steel Talons faction. Another option could be "Upgrade range on Flamethrowing Tanks" if you're Nod's Black Hand faction.

Would it be hard to implement this kind of thing from a building menu like this? Is changing unit statistics or unit graphics in-game feasible?

Changing the unit graphics/function in-game is possible (just look at the Ore Truck and Pillbox), but I have no idea if a tech upgrade option to change the unit stats on the fly would be workable without causing problems.

While it's not quite the answer you're after, you could always go the same way as Tiberian Dawn Redux (which your mod idea reminds me of). No, not by going straight to the SAGE engine, but by giving the subfactions alternative or upgraded equivalent units/tech trees by default.
