[Modeling] General Information & Discussion

Just had a short chat with Bellator, who makes his models with Google Sketchup (free version), renders them with 3D Max and makes some final corrections (color, palette, etc) at the end.

I am sure that other end program can be used for rendering e.g. Blender (open source), but I guess we have to start compiling a HOWTO somewhere.

Here is a chat exempt:

Code: Select all

[00:29] <bellator1> heres the ship i made
[00:29] <bellator1> use darker colors on the fringes and brighter colors in the middle
[00:30] <wuschel> Makes sense. And does not look to complicated.
[00:30] <bellator1> that white mast is the sort of detail that is borderline
[00:30] <bellator1> anything smaller than that generally does not work
[00:30] <bellator1> or it looks bad

Heyho,

will you use gimp or some other free software for the end-part or photoshop?

Also thanks for trying this with blender.

Btw: will we have .shp .pal forever? are there plans to get rid of it? it's depressing to be limited to so few colours. and conversion is almost impossible.

Edit: This is fun :3
I'll edit manual shades later. Got to go to work.

Edit2: Please get it ingame =)

Thanks for the link. Great to collect this kind of information -- otherwise we never get going in the right direction.

I use photoshop -- however, it is useless for infantry (33000x39 pixel^2 image not savable in PNG).

Re: pal/shp: I hope that in the middle perspective, the OpenRA will switch to some updated file formats that makes graphic editing easier. That would be imperative when it comes to attract new graphic people/artist to the game.

I have not arrived yet at blender, because I am still fooling around with the Google Tool. I still hope that someone will take up the lead and make a step by step guide (e.g. faction colors, palette, rendering, right angle, animations, etc) for the creation of unit graphics.

Google has nice 3D galery of models, maybe we can convert some of them.

for example
Soviet ACV:

Code: Select all

http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=a3f8dfbba446f87b3582a718e492964f&prevstart=60
Allied Patriot Missile:

Code: Select all

http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=2ec6dce3da24a631f35e3c8e94eba291&prevstart=48
Blockade:

Code: Select all

This post might be helpful when using Sketchup and Blender. Is anyone bold enough to take it from here?
