for editing .mix files you can use xcc mixer, some other things can be changed with editing the yaml files

I looked around, and i have 2 questions:
1, what are .shp files and how do i edit/make them?
2, where are the .mix files and what do they do?

1. SHP files are basically a collection images and some other data. You can convert them to PNG on XCC Mixer. Then you can edit the images and then convert them back to SHP again (again with XCC Mixer).

2. MIX files are a archive with files.

You should join the IRC channel (irc.freenode.net #openra) then I could provide you the information you need to start modding OpenRA.
