I present a selection of maps intended to replace the official TD map pool (replacing the maps in the playtest). I chose this list in collaboration with a few regular TD players and it's still open to discussion.

I have attached archives (both .zip and .tar.gz) containing the correct version of each map. Using that, it would be easy to check through the selection using a fresh install of OpenRA (or just delete/temporarily move your custom maps). You can also download the folder via Dropbox:

There were 33 official maps in release-20161019 and 54 maps in playtest-20170304. There are 70 maps in the list below. The hashes are the map codes, searchable on the resource centre (http://resource.openra.net) and used to indicate the correct version.

The map pool has already been updated with the most played maps on the server. New maps that are created and/or being played on several times over in the next release can be subject to change for the official pool. The maps currently in the playtest has been reviewed and looked through on number of times played.

I don't think that's how the selection worked. One infrequent player (dtluna) made a selection, which was adjusted by SoScared and some of the devs.

The overhaul of the official map pool was discussed here: https://github.com/OpenRA/OpenRA/pull/12798
That demonstrates the selection wasn't simply based on popularity (nor should that be the sole criterion). See the post by pchote about 2/3 the way down the following page starting with "For completeness here are the stats for the new maps.". Some maps had been barely played.

The playtest selection has some serious issues.

Some maps have errors (e.g. Guarana is missing a tib tree), others have bad tiles (e.g. Tiberium Connected), some are outdated versions (e.g. AlphaJunoIV), or have been replaced with unpopular edits (e.g. Manufacturing Consent, dtluna's edit of Botany). Some very popular maps were deleted (e.g. Deterring Democracy, Dead in Motion 2, Mt. Nukebait) and other very popular maps were overlooked (e.g. Dualism, Hegemony or Survival, Jungle Conflict, Year 501).

A major issue is that many messy edits of good maps have been included. There are 6 different versions of Valley of Gold - that's 11% of the map pool! Eight of the maps (15% of the pool) are lazy edits of popular maps, with additional spawns and resources added.

For the TD community to grow and to thrive, it must move away from a single server full of all the online players. Else a lagfest clusterfuck tends to result and that isn't good for player retention. Sure bigger games do happen and they will continue to happen, but we don't need official maps for that. Including so many maps of this nature in the official pool, and so encouraging an unhealthy trend, is not the right message to send out.

The selection process really disregarded quite a few peoples opinions since it was really only discussed thoroughly on github which quite a few people dont visit.

Im in the favour of GDaves list since it has gone through more TD players than DT's and quite a few players have brought up grievances with the current playtest map pool

For the record, whatever involvement I had was exclusively about tile/name/authorname fixes for maps due to a request by dtluna (I've revised 30+ maps for the RA mod in the past). Whatever influence I had regarding specific maps involved recommendations in putting maps back on his PR that was necessarily not competitively good or popular within the online community but simply historically "iconic".

I gotta say I'm a bit dismayed over the lack of support dtluna has gotten for taking the initiative to deal with the official TD map pool. I couldn't judge upon how well this new map pool aligns with the preferences of the online community but for christ sake what did you lose really - the maps presented in the mods' official map pools is the welcome committee for new players (mostly offline) and from what was in there before was so obnoxiously bad (my personal opinion for many years) it desperately needed a nudge out the door, hence my comment on https://github.com/OpenRA/OpenRA/pull/1 ... -280904500

As for the Github process I stayed off for the most part but as to how the review process went ahead, regardless it was done by people with intent and interest to the future of the TD mod and off course following the open source project as a whole. If that process is regarded as lacking persons of adequate interest or insight, well perhaps you don't have to look too far for the solution. However, it demands getting involved.

One reason I supported the PR push was with the TD map pools' future prospect, precisely what this thread represents and I gotta ask - would this specific thread even be here if it wasn't for dtlunas github contribution?

On the contrary, I for one appreciate the initiative taken and effort made by dtluna, and I have told him that. I also told him that I was working, along with others, on an alternative map pool.

I don't understand the basis for your dismay. This thread is about community engagement, not a rejection of dtluna's effort. People can have opinions about what makes a good map pool without intending any personal offence to others.

People need a little coaxing to get involved and to contribute. They need the necessary information and engagement.

Probably just a hunch combined with the general attitude experienced shortly after the PR was merged and word spread around the TD community. There certainly wasn't too much rejoicing thereafter. My reaction to this thread was likely colored by that experience.

I'd agree that Dave's list of maps here is preferable to Luna's selection and I'd rather see this bunch of maps appear in the next release.

It's definitely good to see the discussion move here from GitHub. In absolute honesty, I had several issues with Luna's picks but didn't want to say anything much over there that might disrupt the process of actually getting the pool updated, as there seemed to be some support for what he was doing. I figured that at least *something* was happening, and it set a precedent for further consideration of the pool going forward, even if it was a less-than-perfect jumping off point.

I'm certainly looking forward to see where TD's map pool is going. As for the above list just keep in mind someone would have to actually have to take initiative to prep the PR and get it through a review process.

I do vastly prefer this list than the one currently on the playtest, but if I could make two suggestions, they would be.

1. Break of Day (4 Player Map)
2. East vs West 3 (3 v 3)

I know Break of Day is probably not the most balanced map ever, but from my casual TD standpoint, it somehow feels like an iconic map to me for OpenRA. It is also one of the few maps that are asymmetrical.

As for East vs West 3, this is more for the offline players who enjoy playing against AI. Sometimes it is fun to fight the AI when outnumbered, and this map is ideal for such matchups. If the AI learned how to expand, then the more common multiplayer maps would be fine. However, since they seem content remaining in their starting location, clumping them together and providing a lot of Tiberian seems to be the way to go for fighting against the AI.

Of course, I am by no means a Tiberian Dawn veteran as I mostly lean towards the Red Alert side of things, but this is just my words on the matter.

Ill start re-reviewing these maps a bit later. A few examples I want to throw in:

No map will make it into the official map pool that has advanced rule sets on them due to the chance of them breaking after every client update.

The map Letters from Lexington was removed because Visceroids attacked the starting spawn locations so this map is essentially imbalanced/broken. If it wasn't for the visceroids this map would be fine.

I agree on East vs West 3. Same reason discussed on the github and from Sire here.

As for the playing/downloading of the maps on the github keep in mind not every player enables the checkmark box of "Send anonymous information for collection of future playtests." So these numbers can actually be much bigger. Its why in the download number count is extremely high compared to the play numbers. (IE: Insert Names Island Duel map could very well be 2000+ play count rather then as the time of recorded 1200+)

Understanding Power is a decent map but it suffers one huge critical flaw. Keep the enemy from moving out and you win. Very easy to do and used to do this a lot vs Psydev.

Escalations from what ive played before turns into a rush to the center and capture a hold onto it. Once the player is able to do that it turns into a slow death game of starvation.

Manufacturing Consent doesn't exist with that hash.

I don't remember playing on Turtlez. Does this turn into a chokey type map?

WarKraft is an advanced rule set map.

Ultimately there might be way to many maps in this list and its possible it will need to be condensed to match closer to the released number of maps now.

I attempted to avoid all map versions with advanced rules for that reason. A check will reveal if any slipped through.

I used the latest version of Letters from Lexington, with the visceroids removed and tile errors fixed.

I'm happy to add that in; the online community do play it too. I note a difference in the map hashes between release and playtest:

Do you mean the issues flagged by the Lint check status on the Resource Center? It says that 7 actors were "not defined by any rule". I have replaced that map with the playtest version, map hash: 45444d59551f6e97d644d1136c117f892eab0ef1

Not everyone plays at your level though

This map was suggested by anjew. I can remove it if it's unpopular.

I've played this map quite a lot and the central field has rarely been the key to victory. There are trees in each of the four corners that offer safer resources in addition to the two fields reachable by each player from their spawn point.

That's the version shipped in release-20161019. In my experience, people prefer it over the newer version.

It can get a little chokey on the centre bridges at times, though it doesn't happen every game. Air tends to be popular owing to the isolated oil derricks and the ridge+river.

I had grabbed the wrong version. I've now replaced it with version 1, map hash: cb676f58858abc6a866b15c85b240dc1961c67b6

The difference compared to what? The playtest version? The version above is the release-20161019 version, which is the latest version at the Resource Center. The playtest version (dd99f677c6ec2dd5c3e7fa09b18f69d7215d3398) came under the heading "tweaked 10 maps (author name, map name, tiberium trees)" at https://github.com/OpenRA/OpenRA/pull/12798. I note that CombinE has highlighted an imbalance: spawn B can build over the ridge after clearing the strip of blue tib, but spawn E cannot. He may produce a version that addresses this.

I had chosen the latest at the Resource Center, but I see the played stats are low. I've replaced with the release-20161019 version (71e80a0ecfea1cd23199b2c76f8a08286086f973), which isn't on the Resource Center, though I note that map was also tweaked for playtest-20170304 (71e80a0ecfea1cd23199b2c76f8a08286086f973). We should review whether the tweaked versions for some or all of the 10 maps that dtluna mentioned in the github post of Feb 18 should be used. One concern I have is whether they have been sufficiently tested. E.g. there is a tree missing on the playtest version of Guarana, though all versions on the Resource Center had that tree.

That was bugged (rocks blocked the movement of one spawn) and so was deleted. A new version exists now (a44821288d43fd5ac73478eab3d71998f48d5988). This replaces the destroyable bridge, which resulted in stalemate in some games.

Though the list could be trimmed a little, I don't think it is too big. I think it reflects the diversity of the game (maps types, play styles, tilesets, etc.) and isn't high when you consider that it's split over 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, 4v4, 8v8 and FFA. With the addition of map 'plan b' (by request), the total stands at 72 maps, or an average of 17 maps per map size (number of spawn points, considering only 1v1 to 4v4).
