Why doesn't Nod have the SSM launcher in OpenRA?

In its original role the SSM launcher overlapped strongly with the artillery, and we wanted to avoid having redundant units. At the same time, Nod had trouble countering late-game Orca spam, so it was repurposed into an AA-only SAM launcher to address both issues.

The SSM launcher was a special single-player unit and not supposed to be buildable. But whatever its cool.

It didn't exist (Except in the dniosaur mission) in single player only multiplayer. The multiplayer scene saw a large number of these units.

Nah I remember its in one of the missions and the AI built it in multiplayer due to a bug.

One of the Dinosaur missions?

The AI was able to build it in multiplayer because everyone can build it in multiplayer. (Everyone being Nod faction in multiplayer)

He is wrong. You could both fight against it and build it in the missions provided by The Covert Operations.

At least I remember it being a big part of The Covert Operations.

There is no Covert Operations mission that allows the construction of SSM Launchers for the player. Chem Warriors were the only close unit (Again mass use on multiplayer) for introduction as the new expansion unit type. Even then however, this unit exist in the base C&C95 game.

Unless you refer to C&C Sole Survivor (Again multiplayer based) then it allows you to utilize the SSM Launcher as a base unit. However, gameplay in Sole Survivor is completely different. (However, a gameplay mode I would like to see come around. Hint Hint)

Otherwise, players used the SSM Launchers in Multiplayer games to some extent when it came to base crawling tactics. Although the unit lacked greatly in damage vs tanks and fast moving vehicles. With how slow the SSM moved made it a difficult unit to protect let alone the EXTREMELY long reload time it would have. It made artilleries and MLRS better units in comparison which is amusing as the artillery in C&C95 was not the most stellar unit for the Nod forces.

Little funny thing i found reading into the SSM since i actually never used it because i never play multiplayer but apparently the MLRS was called MSAM in the code.

I think the SSM sprite suits MSAM a bit better

I might be mistaken, but I think I remember hamb mentioning he was working on something like this. I could also be mistaken there and it was somebody else. Could also be mistaken there and it was actually a joke.

You know what, on second thought, I was never here... ;)

Actually that is true jazz however i think hamb has stopped due to openra needing more functionality

Here is the github issue: https://github.com/OpenRA/OpenRA/issues/4361

Probably if you capture the Nod Construction Yard and build them using their tech. I havn't played Sole Survivor but I have played Covert Operations and know you can get your hands on the SSM. Either one way or the other.

Capturing enemy tech will need to be tested. Something I can go through myself on TFD.

The main thing as the question post goes on the thread is SSM isn't a viable unit in ORA. It is better used as anti air (AKA MSAM).
