Has anyone tried playing OpenRA with a Steam controller yet?

Just wondering if anyone's tried this, I've heard that the Steam controller might be decent for RTS's, was wonder if anyone here's tried OpenRA with one.

Kane's Wrath for 360 has a pretty impressive and handy interface in my opinion.

I played C&C 3 (I think that's what it was) on xbox once, agreed it wasn't very good. That said the Steam controller isn't a normal controller. I imagine the touchpads work much better than a thumbstick.

yeah , i have a steam controller

i have tried it , and it works ... you probably need a couple of practice games against the AI before you can beat it ... but it should be possible (so far i didnt have the time to do so)

missions could be difficult ... cause theres lots of pressure ...

would not recommend multiplayer ... (althought that would depend on your enemy i guess)

There is some consideration to take into affect when it comes to steam controllers and the RTS scene.

Controllers are a bad idea over all for RTS gaming. The same is said for FPS gametypes.

http://gizmodo.com/5593116/were-pc-game ... ng-project

Tests were made against this idea.

Universe at War: Earth Assault by Petroyglyph is an RTS based game that supported both console and PC platforms together in 1v1 games. Whenever I came across an XBOX logo or PlayStation logo I knew I was going to win everytime. Which is what happened.

As for the Steam controller supporting its genuine touchpad system for precise gaming is a rather good upgrade it still can't compare to mouse and keyboard. There are gamers out there who use trackballs. http://www.amazon.com/Kensington-Orbit- ... =trackball

These trackball mice are EXTREMELY precise. More so then a regular mouse even! It takes practice to get used to but if you ever game across an RTS player or FPS player who knows how to use these? You better have your game face on.

Always depends on the game
Try Endwar or R.U.S.E
It's almost impossible to play without a controller :p

How did you find it?

Around 6 years ago I was playing quite a bit of it on a real Nintendo 64, and played through all the standard NOD missions, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The men's screams while being flame throwered are so harrowing. But I recently fired it up again, since discovering OpenRA, and I found it pretty unplayable.

well , i did only fire it up to see if it works "smooth" (cause on a raspberry that isnt really expected , usually)

its pretty simple ... but i like what they did with mixing 2d and 3d graphics ... the infantry looks just gorgeous to me , you see them as as 2d-sprites from a weird angle ... but they look really neat like that

i didnt get too much into it , but i will definitely try to

and of course ... compared to OpenRA , its crappy to play :D ... but i would even go so far , that i'd say , even the original "command&conquers" for pc's are a waste , compared to OpenRA

theres a slighlty difference in the console version though , thats what makes it interesting to try ... (i missed a lot of console games , because im not a console-guy)

my use of an XBox 360 controller of OpenRA

Post by flamewh33l »

i must say that although the XBox controller is a lot more harder to play, i actually managed to get a decent button layout for my XBox controller using XPadder...

the outcome i got from it was actually quite decent, the only thing i was falling short on was forgetting that my left trigger is my left click when i'm building, other than that i had pretty much gathered a decent way to play on an XBox controller; this i tested out on the AI and boy did i get decent results from it.

this is the layout i used - http://imgur.com/a/WRhkC

although it may show i was more delayed than the AI, i had just enough time to amass an army and defend the first wave before sending a counter attack which kills everything.

evidence to back my point up:

http://www.gamereplays.org/openra/repla ... &id=314831
http://www.gamereplays.org/openra/repla ... &id=314832

i hope you like the set up and those who use XBox controller give this a shot, let me know if that layout was okay for you :)
