Hey folks! This is not an OpenRA video, but it is tangentially related.
Since my laptop has been struggling with rendering videos, I'm in the market for a new PC.
I have now theorycrafted a build - help me decide on the components required to fulfill my dream of running Shattered Paradise at 30 FPS!

Trying to give a non-bias recommendation, though I can't speak to prices or where to buy from.

CPU:
If you can get an Intel CPU, I think they are quite a bit faster at encoding/decoding video, even for the less powerful models.
Any recent i5-i7 or Ryzen 5-7 (i9 or Ryzen9 might be overkill)

GPU:
Either model mentioned in the video should be fine.
Though NVIDIA GPUs offer CUDA which your video editing program (or other software) might support, though now openCL is catching up, which AMD and NVIDIA GPUs can use. The RAM on the GPU is important, and 16GB should be good for most titles and tasks. If you plan on playing cutting edge or unoptimized (AAA) games, 32GB on the GPU is a safe bet.
I do think the 3080 TI in the video would be more powerful than the 6800XT, but seriously doubt that would matter for OpenRA, unless a cryptominer is added.

RAM:
You asked if you should get 16x4 or 32x2, I think whichever is cheaper is fine, unless you plan a long term strategy of upgrading later, in that case go with 32GB sticks (and if you upgrade later, it is best to match RAM sticks with the same size and speed)

Storage:
You picked a 1TB NVME drive which should be good, though you picked two 6TB hard drives. Hard drives are good for large cheap storage, but are quite a bit slower and can be damaged if the computer is moved or bumped while running. If you need storage space, hard drives are the way to go, otherwise check out standard 2.5 inch SSDs, which are cheaper than NVME and quite a bit faster than HDD.
You may also be able to find external SSDs at electronic stores that you could use for not-as-large portable storage.

Monitor:
This is personal preference, unless you want to limit power consumption. 1440p is a sweet spot, but if you want something cheaper 1080p is OK. Personally I've had good experiences with ASUS monitors.

Other cards:
You shouldn't need Sound, Network, or USB extension cards, your motherboard has wireless and ethernet connections as well as quite a few USB ports.

PSU:
850 watts seems high, but maybe the parts are high performance and demanding. It just may upset your electricity bill :p As long as it has a Gold rating, it should be safe for your hardware. On that note, invest in a decent surge protector! It can save your setup from lightning for 45 EUR.

PS: be sure to limit your game's FPS or enable VSync so you're CPU/GPU aren't working overtime to pump out frames as fast as they can!

Any questions feel free to message me, and hope you enjoy your new PC

@jinx Thank you for the input! Ill definitely be looking into a surge protector, that sounds like a smart investment :)

In today's cast, we are back to TD - can Gacius complete his redemption arc after being inches away from defeating the mighty ZxGanon?
