A suggestion to the game: Ping

Post by Wolf »

Basically I have been playing some multiplayer games with a friend and when I tell him about something and he asks where it is I find myself having to find a landmark that tells him where it is.

In this situation it would very much help to be able to ping the map.

I"m not sure if people will like this since the original didn't have it,
but I would like to see it and most of the modern strategy games have it.

Thank you for reading.

This has been wanted by the devs for a while, and is a pretty sound suggestion.

Yeah, this would be really nice. Could be either on the minimap or directly in-game with a smoke-bomb like sprite... how does it work in other RTS?

Personally I wouldn't mind seeing something like the on-map drawing system in the Spring RTS Engine.

Sure, it's a much bigger addition, but then the benefits are greater as well.
It would be incredibly useful for team-based games, and would not be exploitable due to drawings being team-exclusive - only allies could see it, and allies could erase it just as easy.

See https://github.com/OpenRA/OpenRA/pull/4682 for the Generals like triangle that is currently making its way into the development version.

A small marker on the minimap with an unintrusive alert sound -- somewhat similar to the action in AoEII -- would actually be a neat addition. Perhaps the marker could be the colour of whichever player uses it.

I have fully implemented this word-for-word, and it will be in the next playtest.
