Can we all please play the same version of the game?
Why do we have to be split up between like 5 different versions at all time? JUST PLAY THE RELEASE! Fuck playtests!

Playtests have fixes/new features, and -- surprise surprise -- NEED TESTING.

Yea so test them and switch back to the release, or at least play the latest playtest and not be all over the dang place.

What, test them once and just say "yer ok"?
Fascinating. Absolutely fascinating.
'Testing' in this context means to play the fuck out of something so that as many gameplay situations as possible can arise in normal play, thereby (but hopefully not often, if at all) triggering any faults/bugs and/or uncovering any balance issues ASAP. You can't just play it a few times, assume everything's fine, and then go back to a near-obsolete version that has few (or no) features that still need testing and/or displays issues that may have already been addressed. That's what happens with rushed (and usually commercial) releases and why shitty broken games are released that end up requiring 500MB patches to fix things every three fucking months (minor exaggeration). I know OpenRA is neither of those things, but the point stands.
That being said, it's not often the regular players (read as: forum members) that are the problem with using multiple versions. It's the lazy shits and illiterate bell-ends on the outside who don't like checking for updates or are scared of the words 'unstable playtest' (thinking it's going to nuke their fucking PC) and then come here whining when nobody bothers connecting to their server (or when they can't connect to anyone else's). Unless there is a major gameplay/engine problem with the latest playtest, there's really no reason to cling to a previous release. More playtesting means more bugs are found & squashed, which in turn makes everything better and everyone happy.

Playing playtests is one thing.
Playing versions 6 months or more old is just ridiculous. And I see people on servers like that from time to time.

The latest supposedly stable version (20121019) is too unstable. The latest playtest (20121104) appears to be (at least superficially) as stable as the unstable stable 20121019. However, 20120630 FTW. I have all 3 installed.

Right now openra is really crashy/unstable, this is the reason for this...
All new players go on 1019... so when people see 3 people in a lobby on 1019 they install that ver and play with them...
but over all 1019 is the most unstable version of openra...which is why people try not to play it...
1104 is abit more stable and have the best balance but it still crash quiet abit...
0630 is like the most stable version.. but its balance is much worse than the others... and there is a major exploit in that version which makes people able to see buildings through fog of war...
So tl;dr play 1104 untill a more stable version comes out
