Can't install version 20110207

Post by Zanman777 »

Hello! First of all, let me congratulate you for the astonishing recreation of Red Alert you put together... It really is amazing, I even love it more than the original game! ;)

Well, unfortunately I'm having trouble running the 20110207 version. I install it, and then run it. It prompts me to download necessary files for the game to run, and I press "Download". It starts downloading and, once done, starts exctracting/unpacking. After a few seconds, it crashes. It then tries to run the game itself, showing the "Fixing EVA", etc. phrases on the lower right corner of the screen, and after a few seconds it crashes a second time, this time to windows desktop itself.

What should I be doing to fix this problem?

Cheers, and keep up the good work!

Hi Zanman,
It sounds like the game has installed correctly, but is crashing when loading the main menu.

Check the FAQ section on "My game just crashed!", and post your exception.log here, as well as letting us know your operating system, cpu, and graphics card.

We've been able to verify this as a general problem that affects all Windows XP users. None of the developers or regular testers run XP, otherwise we would have caught this earlier.

We will fix the problem and push a new release that fixes this within a few days.

The same problem on Windows 7.

solution:

1. Download and start extracting.
2. Find system variable 'temp'
Image
3. Go to this folder
4. Find file like this (hint: sort by date)
Image
5. Unpack this file(with 7-zip) to %OpenRA_folder%\mods\ra(cnc)\packages\

Sorry for my English language

When you run the game on windows, open the explorer and find the harddrive you have windows installed on. IMPORTANT: You can only find the right files if you downloaded them ingame before. It does not matter if the game crashed after the download finished, as long as it finished you can find the files.

This harddrive is usually C:, but you should know yourself where you installed it :p.

On this harddrive there is a folder called "Userdata" or something like this. The name depends on your windows version and language. Inside is one folder for each Login your computer has (example: if you and your brother each have their own login for the computer both of you have such a folder in there).

Look for "your" folder in there. It is usually named after your login name. (hint: right-click on your taskbar and open the "Task Manager". Or press CTRL+ALT+DEL to do the same. If you look at the "processes" tab you will find a row called username. The name you have to look for will be shown there. Just ignore the ones called SYSTEM, LOCAL or NETWORK, the last one is your name).

From here on you can use the windows based filesearch function. Tell it to search only in that folder and its subfolders for a folder called "Temp". There may be more than one "Temp" folders in there, but cheking them shouldn't take too long.

Once you have found the Temp folder, look inside for two files. They are named randomely but you can find them by their filesize. In my folder they are 10287 KB and 6141 KB big.

It is important that you can see the file extensions. The extensions are some weird rubbish, rename the file and change those rubbish extensions to rar or zip. Now you should be able to open them with winzip, winrar or 7zip. Unpack them into your OpenRA folder , in: \mods\ra(cnc)\packages\

Lots of text, hope it helps.

explainted it for dummies like me ^^

so well ... i knew i had to search my temp folder
my problem was that i dont know where the temp folder is
in windows 2000 or xp i know where i find it
but for somereason i cant find it on win7

there is just one temp folder on my whole computer and its not the right one
:/ its from another programm

edit:
can i change some settings so that the red alert content is saved somewhere else?
So i could find it and extract it.

EDIT2:
FOUND IT
ofc i couldnt find it because i didnt type "%temp%" but instead "temp"

EDIT3:
awesome it works :D
