Maps go in the release folder then you need to restart the game for the maps to show up. Your assumptions about ra/cnc being short for Red Alert and Tiberian Dawn are correct.

Did you try not closing the game, i.e. switching to an already opened browser window by ALT+TAB? That works for me on Mint as well as Manjaro.

Alternatively, you could run the game in windowed mode, if switching out of a fullscreen window does not work.
