I guess thats the limitations of the original system. Infantry use different code, as you can have 5 stand and shoot from a single tile. There are other code methods. From what youve said changing the way they move would require a re code. Ive added that to the cons list. Naval units would benefit m...

Englands got James Bond France invented grenadiers EUREKA A grenadier (from French, derived from the word grenade[1]) was originally a specialized soldier, first established as a distinct role in the mid-to-late 17th century, for the throwing of grenades and someti...

I think some of the problem is too many tiny maps that pit bases right next to each other so you don't have much choice but to base-walk along with your attack. On much larger maps its not as much of a problem. Very true The Fog of war (not in the original game) makes it harder to use mobile units ...

ref looks telescopic to me Yes i considered that but it still doesnt look right or cool Im not aginst the idea of a mobile tesla turret thang, i just think it would be better to design a new unit from scratch. One that realy looked the part. Problem is any such thing = a huge amount of work. At lea...

Longer range artillery would help counter cruisers, see my OP The accuracy / range trade off is just part of real life *Cruisers are nasty enuf as is, maps are too small to give cruisers longer range. Maps with sea obviusly have less land...and the proportion of that land that is out of range of cr...

Tanks got nerfed so much or left behind statwise so much that no one uses them For over 100 years now tanks have been central to attack...only in openRA are they effectively nerfed to the point of unusability Q how did this happen in the first place ? Ref Do you think shock troopers should be nerfe...

agreed, but nice, easy to click on colour boxes is the CORRECT way to go..x,y colour picker = bad design for RTS games A 10x10 grid would give a 100 colours. Think well defined and well seperated shades of colour & brightness...OPTIMISED FOR CLARITY ! The colours carefully selected so you cant 'bugs...

Why the original Redalert was so popular

Why the original Redalert was so popular Small details matter. They make the whole greater than the sum of the parts. Unit Costs Scale Price range from $100 to $2500 , just like monopoly the money maths is easy when the numbers are in this range. Many RTS game complicate things by using $$$ costs t...

ref Needs different counters than "normal" arty, but a Player also gets some more time to deal with it due to inaccuracy. Yup thats the win for me to! The vibe to pick up here is that you would be surprised just how much you can increase the range without breaking the game or the original spirit of...

Its not an artillery nerf (reduction) its a range & unit armour (improvement) + 2range just to clarify things With cost raised and unit speed and ROF (rate of fire) lowered so they are not OP (overpowered) I tested 101 different artillery variations the one above = most fun ( the longer the range t...

Red Alert Artillery a viable alternative

Red Alert Artillery a viable alternative There is no doubt that the original artillery unit was naff beyond comprehension. Its woefully shortrange a joke. My alternative to the current openRA artillery this has been extensively playtested and made my final edit. Equip the artillery with the same gu...

Great animation effort but it looks a bit naff. Because it looks as though the emerging coil is taller than the tank it emerges from...thinks Dr Who Tardis If you realy want a 'mobile tesla coil' that is deployable in the feild you need to come up with a design that is visually believable and themat...

Redalert Shrinking the size of the soviet sub

Redalert Shrinking the size of the soviet sub The standard soviet sub has allways been a bit cumbersome and bulky. I think its worth considering shrinking the size of the standard sub by about 20% so that it is in better proportion with the rest of the ships in the game. Pro's Better visual proport...

The original redalert has so many things right IMHO openRA should primarily be about polishing and tweaking the original game to a high sheen. Sticking to the key design principles that work so well and not getting carried away on endless journeys of design exploration. There is still a lot of basi...

Redalert Depot as an example

Mobile units are complex , its worth looking at simpler static things like buildings and considering traffic flow and how unit agility will be influenced. A good understanding of buildings is essential to mobile unit balancing. Redalert Depot as an example Why is is the way it is ? Its an octagon, ...
