release-20170421 - screen flickering

Post by falter »

Hi there,

After installing the latest release (release-20170421) when I launch openra I now get a screen flashing issue... The screen flashes black almost every second. I am using a 4k screen (@ 3840x2160) so I wonder if this has anything to do with the issue?

I noticed on github there is mention of a setting 'Graphics.DisableWindowsDPIScaling' ('https://github.com/OpenRA/OpenRA/issues/13099') which I'd like to try, but the instructions just say "update your settings.YAML".

Please can someone advise which of the 2 YAML files needs updating (OpenRA\mods\common\chrome or OpenRA\mods\cnc\chrome) and where/what exactly I need to add to this file?

I hope this is the correct place to post, but please let me know if it should be elsewhere?

go to documents > openra.
there you find settings.yaml.
open it with a text editor.
behind entry Graphics you'll see some other entries like Fullsceen: true
insert 'DisableWindowsDPIScaling: true' in a new line (don't forget the tab/indentation)

I don't know if this helps solving you black screen flickering, but its woth a try. It helped with my "heat flicker" graphical errors in the game.

Thank you so much! This has resolved the issue with my 'screen flicker'

I think I saw someone else mention an 'opt in' for the DPI scaling, which might be a good idea until the root of the problem can be resolved

cheers :-)

I get black triangles popping on and off randomly, as soon as the game starts (right after loading the map). It‘s impossible to play. Is there an “easy to do“ solution for this problem? I‘m not familiar with modding something, just happy to can play the game.

Seems like a low level problem with your hardware. Updating your graphic card drivers might help.
What are your system specs (especially graphics card/onboard grahpics) and did OpenRA run without issue before?
Also try a simple reinstall of OpenRA and/or try setting a lower/higher screen resolution (in OpenRA) :)

Low level hardware could be possible :shifty: it‘s an older notebook, intel hd graphics 5500 is inside... update was not available.
It‘s the first time i run OpenRA, i tried tiberian dawn and red alert, same issue with both.
It‘s kind of embarrassing but i can‘t find where the resolution can be changed in OpenRA, i tried to change it in windows but, of course, that was not the solution :|

Hmm,
yeah resolution isn't all too obvious ;) It's only possible in "windowed" mode. So Settings > Display > Graphics Mode. Try it.
I just wanted to check if it is a fullscreen problem or problem with a certain resolution.

Your grahics card seems to be all right. It supports shader model 5.0. I had problems in the past with shader model 2.0..

Either your graphics card is ded (then other games, especially with 3D graphics will show weird stuff too) or OpenRA has some issues.

This can also happen if you override certain GPU settings (e.g. texture filtering) through your GPU driver settings in Windows.

Thank you very much!!
 I tried everything but the windowed mode, now it looks good except the small map on the upper right edge, is it possible that there is an option to switch it on and of?
