Foretaste Tournament on the Playtest, 10th February,4 pm UTC

Post by Lorrydriver »

Hey,

on the 10th of February the current RAGL season will officially come to an end, so it's about time we think about what's going to happen next season. We'll finally have a master's division worthy of its name, since OMnom, Happy and kazu could all be contesters for the title!
There's always a lot of discussion about the map pool, so I want to help the RAGL team by getting some real map testing done.

I'm hosting a tournament, which will feature new (no RAGL S4 maps), balanced, competitive 1v1 maps. In order to find good maps for my tournament I ask you guys to suggest potential maps either here, on my stream or in discord.

I'm going to be streaming every day starting this Sunday at around 7 pm UTC https://www.twitch.tv/lorrydriverora. We'll be testing promising maps on those streams and hopefully we'll have around 10 maps for the tournament on the 10th of February.

Here's some details for the tournament on the 10th of February:

10 Player Single Elimination tournament, bracket randomly generated.
Ro16, Quarter finals, Semi finals and 3rd Place match - BO3
Finals - BO5

confirmed players: Lorrydriver, Barf, Happy, kazu, Smitty, Orb, Gatekeeper, FiveAces, OMnom, mo

Tournament Bracket: http://challonge.com/LDRV

Map pool+ contest:

Face-off
Race Tracks
Baphomet
Shadowfiend II
Badger Hills 1.9
Blobomaly
Ragnarok
Teared Strait
River of Gold
Hesperian Grove
Stanitsa
The Great Divide
Trapped

I'll playtest as many maps as possible in my upcoming streams to find good 1vs1 maps. So if you want your map to be playtested and potentially be added to the tournament map pool, just message me.
Having your map in my tournament could also win you some money!
After the tournament you can vote for the best map of the tournament and the creator of that map will receive a small prize as well.
Link to my discord for map suggestions https://discord.gg/M7S34zM

Prizepool: $325
Contributors: Lorrydriver:$25 and 20$ for the RO16 winners Wippie: $50 Abbarat: $150 bullE: $5 SoFiveAces: $50 Kuketon: $25
Any donations https://www.paypal.me/Lorrydriver or the ones I'll receive on stream will go into the prizepool, which will be split as follows:
50% for 1st place
20% for 2nd place
10% for 3rd place
20% for map contest

I'll be streaming this tournament, but I'd love to have either FiveAces, SoScared or Abbarat as a streamer as well, so if you're interested, please let me know.

Need some guidances also. Are experimental designs being considered? Or are we just looking for run of the mill symmetrical maps?

I'm going to assume this means to make good quality 1v1 maps that are designed to be played in RAGL.

Also going to assume this means no experimentive maps. Or maps that are designed in a way to force something or experiment with altering gameplay etc. For example Navy maps, very small maps, very low eco maps, very big maps (I'm looking at you Trenches).

And finally I assume experiments in cosmetic things such as water trees (eskimo) are to be encouraged.

Think maps that are to be played for the next year as the generic 1v1 maps. Make the next pitfight :)

Yeah, I'll be trying out almost anything you can throw at me, but within reason. If you just want add bridges for fun or force naval play, but the map has flaws and is fundamentally bad, then I don't think I'll like it much.

Water trees?!

Time to follow up my Rumble in the Jungle idea with Battle in the Bayou.

May be worth messaging the map builders to make them aware.

Will we see another bogey map this season like KOTG?!

Hey,

thanks to everyone who suggested some really promising maps.
This is my list of maps, we actually got quite a few already, which is awesome.
We'll start testing them on stream today.

Keep making and suggesting more maps, boys!

Surprised you added Obsurd. Think that map needs a revision, which I have done but I don't feel the map offers anything special currently so would prefer if you tried the following out instead. But you're more than welcome to play it ofcourse.

Elongation:
https://resource.openra.net/maps/25430/
This is a experimental type map, but feel it has potential. And would like to hear more thoughts on it.

Containment:
https://resource.openra.net/maps/25376/
This is a typical run of the mill map. It was intended to be boring/ simple, but it ticks the correct boxes and has some character.

Badger Hills:
https://resource.openra.net/maps/25429/
This got a serious revision I just finished. So if you could revisit, that would be nice.

I've had to delete a post in this topic that was doling out nonconstructive criticism of Lorrydriver's choice of contestants and award scheme.
If you are going to criticise then keep it on topic and don't resort to name calling. The choice of contestants may be controversial to some but please remember, in Happy's words:

"Lorrydriver has picked his top 8 to showcase the new maps for RAGL. All 8 are now in masters."

Everyone of them is qualified to be selected; it's Lorrydriver's choice who is invited as it is his tournament.
As always, if you have issues with moderation or want to discuss something else, my inbox is always open.

Oh yeah, eskimo, you're right. I actually remember Obsurd and I didn't like it very much. Your other maps look sweet though. I added them to the list.

First update for yesterday's stream.
We only took at look at 5 Maps but there were a couple of really good ones in there.
I'll mention my favorites so far, but all the other map do have potential as well.

Race Tracks by Blackened stands out as it might one of the best small maps I've ever seen in RA, if the player spawns get changed slightly, Race Tracks is almost guaranteed to make it into my map pool.
You guys should check it out, it might be the small map that so many people requested.

Face-off
also impressed me but we need to do further testing in order to find out if the the player who claims the bottom expansion does gain too big of an advantage.
