I want to host a OpenRA graphical asset contest!

Post by epice »

Ok so I think we need new graphical assets like terrain and especially civilian buildings.

So I want to host a contest for that, I have a bunch of steam game gifts I can give as prizes fist place chooses first, second place chooses second etc.

How should this be done?
Who will volunteer to be a judge?
Who will implement the stuff into the game?
Should we have categories?
How do we tell people about this contest?

Suggestions: Drawbridge, foot bridge (only infantry can cross) tunnels, train tracks & train, nuclear power plant and cooling towers, destructible cliffs, cliff with mineshaft in it, dam, more random map debris, ship docks, etc.

Those are just some ideas but people can make whatever they want! Even if you don't win if your stuffs good enough it gets in the game because why the hell not?

Thoughts?

Can't help you there, I can't make SHPs. I'm only okay at voxels - and that's limited to units.

Hello epicelite.

I like your idea. Unfortunately, we are not all talented enough to create artistic stuff. And when we are, we are sometimes lazy or we have other things to do IRL.
Ok so I think we need new graphical assets like terrain and especially civilian buildings.
I agree with you, we lack good terrain tilesets. Unfortunately, creating tilesets means you need to be (really) talented at 3D modeling and also be patient (because many tiles' edges have to match each other).
Too many modders create mods that are based on current tilesets (and it doesn't help making OpenRA prettier) but I don't blame them... it's hard to create new ones.

As you maybe have noticed, the TilesetBuilder is no longer part of the main OpenRA repository. It now has its own: https://github.com/OpenRA/TilesetBuilder .
Unfortunately, for some reason, it couldn't be compiled but Penev92 has recently fixed this problem. Thanks penev !

Please don't tease us ;) What are exactly these prices? You won't get any contestants if they don't know what they'll get.
How should this be done?
Contestants could have uploaded their work on http://resource.openra.net/ and posted (here) a link but unfortunately the resource site doesn't support Units or Other kind of content.
I guess they will have to host their stuff on Dropbox (or "file hosting wesites" like http://www.filedropper.com/ or else...) or attach files to their answers here on this thread.
The problem is ... the deadline. To create this kind of stuff, artists need time. A lot of time sometimes. See how long the development of Twisted Insurrection mod is taking... years.
Who will volunteer to be a judge?
I don't think only one person should be judge because everybody has his/her own preferences.
Who will implement the stuff into the game?
hmm, good question because even if some people are talented enough to create nice graphics, it doesn't mean they are skilled enough to master the OpenRA.Utility (unfortunately, there is no GUI for it yet).
I know there are other tools that can help create working SHPs/VXLs but it would be up to these modders to use them and to make their stuff work with OpenRA.
Should we have categories?
Why not but won't this complicate prices attribution?
How do we tell people about this contest?
You just did :)
You can also post a message on the Disqus chat platform at http://openra.net .

You can aslo create a new thread on the http://www.ppmforums.com/index.php?f=929 forum.

See you (on the IRC channel maybe)

I still hope this takes off. I can create a tree, perhaps.

But the general idea that new landscapes or new objects offer 1) more strategical stuff and 2) more eye candy is appealing to me.
