Giant maps for wars not skirmishes

Post by mindatrisk »

What does everyone think about creating giant maps - like a 'world' - where multiple players could create giant bases and fight long lasting wars rather than small skirmishes? For me it's more enjoyable to have time to put together strong bases and it makes the strategic and tactical side more complex requiring more thought.

1) engine/network is overflooded quickly in openra, even 6 players games can be very laggy some time due to how much buildings and units each players can build.

2) Some maps like that already exist and are not really interesting, it turns in sims sity more than anything else to the point n° 1) up top here and everybody leave because its unplayable

3) Even if it's not becoming laggy, the game does not allow savegame and that type of game would be countless hours. Go to the bathroom 3 min and you can have half your shit killed because you were not there to defend.

4) Try 1V1 first, you'll see its fun when you understand when it has to be played.

5) Making strong base is called turteling, the objective of the game is killing your oppoenent not make an untakable stronghold and play defense tower for the rest of the game. In openra you have to learn to rely on mobile army more then base defense. Army win the game.

edit : welcome in openra

5 - Huh? If turtling is bad then how are you supposed to play allies? ;)

Who said it's bad ? Just not so effective if you let your opponent take the map and prepare a big hammer to break your shell.

Giant maps for multiplayer does cause some latency issues. Had some 6v6 and 8v8 games in the past and they tend to get laggy. 4v4 is a popular spectrum.

However, for lan games this might work and would be interesting to see how they turn up.

You can create maps yourself and upload. Huge team maps do get laggy as said, but you are welcome to try anything even so.
