My favorite was the 3rd from the openingpost. It looks alot like the actual flak and the contrast between the sky and cannon makes it very recognizable.

And a mapgenerator!

There used to be one in the Red Alert game, if Im correct.

The user could slide different variables:
- amount of ore
- amount of water
- amount of ridges

Hmm maybe it was another game?

Asymmetry. That way the whole map can offer different advantages in different areas, instead of just being some poxy mirror-match. Yes, I like those more too. Symmetric maps also have the disadvantage that it is easy to see who is ahead. If one army has occupied more space then they are probably ah...

Also a nice feauture would be:

At the end of a skirmishgame or replay you must return to the main menu. If you could also return to the skirmish menu (with the same game ready) or to the replay menu, then that would save some clicking.

Not very important, but would be nice.

What makes a map good?

So what should good maps have? Some of my observations: - a map that has different planes to mirror it allows different team configurations (instead of only north vs south) - I personally like maps with many irregularities and scenery. Both do seem to add to the game in terms of hiding stuff and sli...

There are probably a couple corrupted, but also a good deal of tense/crazy/fun games on various maps,

I was also thinking that even for stronger player it can be a shame that some units are not available for soms factions, where they used to be. One thing that I like about RA is that you can combine the strength of units. E.g.: transport flamethrowers in an APC, chronosphere an MCV and deploy, let t...

An idea to check balances (not sure if this works): Setup testruns. Take 3 simple, small maps with certain differences (e.g. lots of ore, little ore, with/without water). Let the AI battle itself for a couple days in various combinations (Ukraine vs France, France vs England, etc) After some time th...

An interesting read perhaps is Jesse Schells book on game design. He has a chapter on balancing games. See chapter 11, page 171.

You can download the book in PDF. Google for "jesse schell art of game design pdf" and the first hit from sfu.ca is the right one.

Your APC gets taken out during an early game rush?
I wrote that sentence with mid/late game rushes in mind. Could/should have added that.

Well in that case... keep it as closest to the original as possible. But still I wonder if the flamethrower isnt slightly overpowered vs buildings. I dont know the exact numbers, but it seems like 1 flamethrower incinerates a building faster than 3/4 mammoths or 10-15 light tanks. On the other hand:...

Thats a possibility as well. But early game rushes are part of RTS so taking out the possibility is a less elegant way of dealing with this, in my opinion. At this time it is too easy (although I dont see this tactic happening all the time) because it doesnt require alot of clicking, getting proper ...
